Hydration and You

We all know that we need to drink water. Almost everyone knows that they probably should drink more water, but especially in the cold winter months, who wants to drink water when there are hot coffee and warm brownies to be had? In this post, I’ll break down the benefits of hydration, and why it is important for you to make sure you are getting your daily h2o.

First of all, studies have shown that up to 60% of your body is made up of water. That being said, you need water to be able to maintain your body composition. Your brain alone is around 75% water. Water is important for keeping your mind sharp. For more on water and the brain, check out this great article from Psychology Today.

Another benefit of staying hydrated is a boost in your metabolism. This is especially true of ice water. With cold water, your body has to heat it up in order to be usable, and that burns a few extra calories and keeps your body working.

If you are drinking enough water, your heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood to your whole body. In one study, 15 young men had their vo2 max (maximal oxygen uptake which can be measured by analyzing the heart rate) tested after a period of hydration and after a period of dehydration. The study found that the vo2 max was significantly higher after the period of hydration (the body could take in and use oxygen most effectively after hydration).

Drinking plenty of water also serves as a beauty tool. When you are adequately hydrated, the cells in your skin stay plump and firm preventing wrinkles and age lines. Water is cheaper than botox, so taking a few extra sips could save you cash.

Another benefit of water is that it keeps you regular. Without proper hydration, your body absorbs all the water it can find, and that can lead to hard, painful stool. Within the urinary tract, adequate hydration can prevent kidney stones. The water will dilute salts and minerals to make them easily passable through urine.

Thanks so much for reading. In my next post, I’ll be discussing some ways to keep yourself hydrated!

God bless!
